  2. question or riddle used by a Zen master to
  3. help a pupil achieve satori (enlightenment).
  4. It is used in the Rinzai school of Zen. A
  5. koan supposedly cannot be understood through
  6. the processes of logic; its solution requires
  7. attainment of a higher level of insight. An
  8. often repeated example is `What is the sound
  9. of one hand clapping?' An answer would be
  10. that the word `clapping' by definition
  11. involves two hands, and therefore this
  12. particular koan is unanswerable.
